How to Navigate
If this is your first time on Bonsai Prelude, Welcome! Thank you for taking an interest in my humble opinions on bonsai. You'll find two types of posts primarily. The first are instructional posts that I wrote with the idea of covering the very basic ideas of bonsai. If you're just starting out learning bonsai I would suggest starting out with "The Art of Watering Bonsai" and moving chronologically forward in the "Bonsai Topics" category. The other material on this blog will be supplemental to a basic understanding of bonsai that you can examine as you please. Also note the "International Bonsai Library" post which is updated periodically to highlight those people that are making big moves in the bonsai community. So please enjoy, and do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions! ~Dylan-

What’s this? A package from Japan? In the words of my girlfriend, “did you buy another pot?” … maybe. This one comes courtesy of my new found friend in Japan, Yukiko. I’m always excited to get a new pot, but … Continue reading

Glazed and Confused
I love glazed pots, and it’s easier to justify buying them even if you don’t have a tree for them in because they look just as good on the shelf as on the bench. And this feature comes in handy, … Continue reading

Japanese Pots
I (intentionally) haven’t talked about pots on the blog yet because I didn’t know anything about them. Most of the trees I’ve bought have come with generic pots, or the pots I’ve purchased have been budget pots. Up until now … Continue reading
Just a Little Progress
Now that my trees have been tucked away for the winter, I thought I’d take a really quick second to post progress on my favorite tree. After a 4 hour workshop I had roughed out the primary structure of the … Continue reading

You might be into bonsai if….
…you spend the first 45 minutes of decorating making sure all the branch tips on your artificial tree point up.

Year 1
Man has it been a year already? It doesn’t feel like it! One year ago today I sat down and decided to do what little I could to contribute to the growing online community of bonsai enthusiasts and teachers. If … Continue reading

Wild Strawberry Kusamono
If you scroll down a bit, you’ll notice the small white wild flower Kusamono that I potted and posted back in March. As it turns out, I didn’t take quite enough of the root and the plant eventually wilted and … Continue reading

Species Profile: Acer buergerianum (Trident Maple)
I’m confident now that with the exception of wiring, which I plan on addressing later in the season, I’ve provided the best ground work possible for getting started with bonsai. There are certainly volumes of knowledge to be learned in … Continue reading
